Welcome to the Access‐Ability Services 辅助技术中心 (ATC). 我们位于 in Room M‐126 in the Marine and Academic Center (MAC). The ATC is where students registered with 接入性能的服务 can go to 使用 computers to complete schoolwork and receive technological assistance with software and assistive technology (see list below).

Assistive Technology is technology designed to compensate for disability and foster 学生独立. Assistive Technology is any item, equipment, software application or system 使用d to increase, maintain, or improve access to information or facilities for individuals with disabilities. The ATC offers a wide array of hardware and software for students with disabilities, which include:

Audio Recording / Audio Playback Devices

Usable for taping of class lectures in order to enable review. 他们也为学生提供 with access to audio versions of books provided by various sources.

盲文

Conversion of text to 盲文 to be read by students who are 盲文 readers. 文件 can be printed (embossed) on site, or read by students who have a refreshable 盲文 显示.

An electronic magnifier that can magnify material up to 44 times its original size. By placing viewing material under a built in camera, the 使用r can zoom in to the desired enlargement and view the document on the attached 监控. Color, contrast and highlight 调整是可能的.

数字智能笔

The Livescribe 3 Smartpen system consists of a digital pen, specially designed paper, 还有一个移动应用程序. A Bluetooth connected ballpoint pen with an embedded sensor is 使用d with a smartphone or tablet to allow 使用rs to pair their notes with audio recordings from the time of notetaking. This allows 使用rs to replay portions of a recording by tapping on the notes they were taking at the time the recording was made.

Scanners are commonly 使用d in conjunction with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to create electronic/digital versions of printed materials and books to be 使用d with other assistive technologies.

Optical Character Recognition

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Software allows 使用rs to turn physical or inaccessible documents into editable digital files. 学生 can turn printed documents into typed Microsoft Word documents, as well as other formats.

读者的钢笔

读者的钢笔 allow 使用rs to have paper documents and books read aloud to them through a speaker or through headphones. The speed of the voice can be adjusted.

阅读 & 编写软件套件

This software assists students whose disabilities affect their reading comprehension 和/或写作技巧. Text is read aloud and each spoken word is highlighted on the 监控. 学生 can pa使用 on any word and have instant access to dictionary, thesaurus, pronunciation, and note-taking features. Materials can be opened from a file, scanned in, or created within the program. Document can be saved to other formats as well.

屏幕放大

学生 with low vision can magnify their computer screens by an adjustable amount. Magnification can be 使用d together with speech output.

屏幕阅读器

Screen readers read text, labels and other objects 显示ed on a computer screen aloud, allowing blind or low vision 使用rs to operate the computer.

平板电脑出借

The ATC loans iPads to Access-Ability 学生. These iPads include academic apps.

语音识别软件

Allows the 使用r to create documents and navigate through programs by speaking into a microphone using specialized commands and prompts.

There are several types of equipment available to be borrowed by students for academic 使用. 学生 interested in borrowing equipment should contact AAS at 718-368-5175 for availability and borrowing contract information.
